about

The 3rd Installment of the classic Nuclear Winter series where Sole updates classic tracks from the 90s through the present with his trademarked style of anarcho-rap detournments.

"These songs were recorded from around 2011 through 2018. They are audio essays from my participation in the Occupy movement, the struggles against police violence, the lulls between, and finally through the rise of Donald Trump & resurgent white supremacy in the United States.

The nuclear winter series began as a rap interpretation of the Situationist concept of detournment. Detournment means to invert the meaning of a work of art belonging to the capitalist class, and use it against it, to weaponize art that is otherwise part of the status quo. When something was happening was happening either in the streets or in the news that I wanted to respond to I would record one of these songs and release them immediately. Not all these songs are detournments, but all were created with a similar spirit of intervention.

This collection of songs is important because it marks a vital chapter in my political development and time in Denver. In that time I went from a philosophy nerd who had never tasted pepper spray to a hardened insurgent whose politics were sharpened in the streets. You can hear me grappling with ideas like voting, non-violence, gun control and developing a more radical politics through the process of participating in social struggle. "
